Hiya! – I have been trying to be consistent with my greetings but to be honest, I will rather just write without thinking too much about it because that is the goal for this newsletter.
It’s almost August already. Whew!! Is it just me or this year is so fast?
Interesting fact, I had changed the month above from June to July and now August🤣🤣🤣. I was really supposed to send the newsletter in June but you see, life happened.
How are you? – This is me genuinely asking.
This letter should be a quick one😊.
In December last year, I tweeted “What are your cybersecurity career goal for 2023?”. In the replies, I promised @oluwabamishe I was going to write about how I overcame the guilt that comes with taking a break.
Interestingly, I had just recently got back from a 5-day break. I spend 2 days doing nothing, aside from sleeping.
Here we go!
The cybersecurity space just like any tech space involves a lot of learning. I mean it does not look like it will ever end.
You find yourself always studying and learning and studying, studying, studying……... This is worse if you are introverted – staying indoors and studying away.
I will be honest; at the earlier years of my career, I studied a lot. I was always reading or taking a course or learning something. I felt guilty and sad when I am unable to or when I must spend my time on something else.
I always thought “I am wasting my time when I should be studying or taking this course”. l was ways finding the slightest opportunity to study.
In 2021, I was burnt out and all I had energy for was my job which honestly, I was just pushing myself to do on most days.
After the burn out, I was reminded I was human – even machines need a break after working for too long. The burnout phase gave me some kind of mind shift and this was where it began.
What I learnt
It can be very difficult when you have “something you are chasing” to take breaks. You feel like it is a wasted time when you are doing nothing. However, from my experience, taking a break rests your brain and gives you a refreshing memory which improves your productivity.
The clarity you get from taking breaks is everything.
When you keep working or studying and not taking breaks, your brain gets tired, and it can be difficult sometimes to understand and retain information .
When your brain is tired and weak, your productivity drops, and it is the reason why it will take you longer time to get work done or process some thoughts and ideas.
What am I saying?
Please take breaks, as much as you can. Some people can hold it longer than others, but it will eventually catch up with you and it will take you more to recover.
Stop feeling guilty for taking breaks . You need it, your body needs it to be at its optimum.
Watch those K-Drama, play those games, go out(preaching what I don’t do? 🤣) and sleep.
